A New Beginning

Two thousand and five will soon be at rest.
Her time is now spent - she completed her test.
We cannot change what's been done or been said,
But now must move on to the new year ahead.

New opportunity knocks on our door,
For we don't yet know what God has in store.
He urges us on and gives new expectation.
In Him we can prosper and have firm foundation.

He is our anchor to weather the storms.
As we rest in Him great works He performs.
Two thousand and six is a book yet unread,
But in Him we'll have confidence as we move ahead.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
Proverbs 3:5-6 NKJ

Too Much Stuff

Omigosh, what's all this "stuff"?
We seem to have more than "enough"!
When we can't find some thing we sputter...
We probably have too much clutter!

"Stuff" just seems to multiply.
And then we start to wonder why
We keep things "for a rainy day"
Which we should give or throw away!

So I'm cleaning corners out,
Making order roundabout.
Doing this may help me find
Lost items - and some peace of mind!

Stuff just seems to sneak right up.
And soon we have a pileup!
I'm going to change my ways this year,
(And hope that "stuff" won't reappear!)

He Touches A Heart

Lord, when You touch a heart, You touch it deeply. Your touch is so gentle.....

You sort through the ruins and pieces of what is there and make order. And you remove what is not necessary to be there.

You see the bruises and tenderly touch those places..... to impart love back into the heart where it has been ripped away. You apply healing balm to soothe and heal.

You take note of the empty places and begin to fill them by the power and warmth of Your Spirit.

You watch over the heart and tend it carefully, not looking away, for each heart is a creation of Your own hands.

Hearts turned toward You will change and become beautiful and whole, strong and confident, vibrant and full of health.

Your touch is beautiful.....

"The Lord is gracious and full of compassion."
Psalm 111:4 NKJ
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."

The Wise Man And The Fool

A fool doesn't listen.
He goes his own way.
You can't teach him much.
His attention will stray.

He gets an idea
And "runs" without thought.
He doesn't much weigh
The results as he ought.

He hurries on...
And is sure he is right,
Until something fails
And he's in a bad plight.

A wise man will watch
The mistakes others make.
And he will think through
All the steps he will take.

He will seek counsel
When he does not know.
He will carefully choose
Which way he should go.

He will measure each step
And take time to pray
About the decisions
He makes every day.

The wise man will prosper,
The foolish will stumble.
One cannot learn
Unless he stays humble.

"The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise."
Proverbs 12:15 NKJ

Rainbow Of Friendship

When a rainbow touches hearts
in precious celebration...
Myriad colors of friendship sweet
bring blessed communication.

Friendship has its promise fair
when one heart knows another
And understands the beauty there
is not like any other.

When a person wants to share,
a friend just seems to know.
They have a very special bridge...
between them is a rainbow.

The beauty of the rainbow
as it shimmers there in place,
Brings joy and priceless moments...
treasures to embrace.

"A friend loves at all times....."

Fruit Of Fine Gold

The fruit of the Spirit
Is as very fine gold...
A much-desired treasure...
Not bought and not sold.

As we walk in the Spirit
It's fruit will be learned.
As we love one another
It may be discerned.

For it will be found
In our actions each day,
And will bring good reward
As we practice it's way.

We never could pay
What this rare fruit is worth,
But our lives will be rich
As we let it have birth.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control...."
Galatians 5:22 NKJ

Bethlehem Town

The still of night o'er Bethlehem lay
When Mary came her child to birth.
She found no place in which to stay
To bring her child of greatest worth,
Except a stable,
But God was able...

Slumbering Bethlehem did not know
What was happening in her midst that eve.
That a tiny babe in a manger low
Was Christ the Lord... She didn't perceive.
But the shepherds came.
They proclaimed His name...

A small beginning... this tiny flame
That was lit in Bethlehem town that night,
As silently the Christ child came
The course of history to rewrite.
The wise men knew...
Wise men still do...

Have you lived in Bethlehem town
And missed this story of great renown?
The manger still remains today.
Will you give Jesus room to stay?
God sent love...
...from above.

Angelsong

Angels drifting, winging, singing...
Music filt'ring through the air...
Silver songs of angels drifting,
Sifting down upon my ear...

Silver threads the angels weave
In thoughts and pretty melodies
To tell of Jesus' birth
On Christmas Eve.

Watch o'er the baby Jesus sleeping...
Rock Him gently to and fro.
Lull Him with your tender singing...
Music 'round the manger flow.

Keep Him warm with melodies
You sing in perfect harmony,.
Let baby Jesus slumber on
In peace.

Think about the baby Jesus,
Think about this baby mild.
Make a place for baby Jesus,
The one on whom the angels smiled.

Light a fire to keep Him warm -
Within your heart His manger form.
Let Him be born within you
Christmas Eve.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

The Real Christmas

Christmas is not meant to be
A time which centers on thee and me,
But is a time when we recall
What God has done for each and all.

God sent Jesus down to earth.
Focus on His wondrous birth!
Rejoice in what our God has done!
He gave us Jesus Christ, His Son.

Christmas really is about
The birth of Christ. Rejoice and shout!
For God has done a glorious thing!
Carols sing and worship bring!

"Then the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.' And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men!' "

The Little Lamb

A little lamb fell
And he could not get up.
He struggled and tried,
But he was just stuck!

He did not know
Just what he would do
To get himself freed...
He had not a clue.

His other sheep friends
Just walked right on by.
He hoped they would help him,
But they didn't try.

Then a little boy saw him
And ran to his side.
"Sad little lamb,
I heard when you cried!"

The little boy helped him
To stand on his feet.
With joy and relief
Did the little lamb bleat!

He was not hurt
But nervous and scared.
He was so glad
That the little boy cared.

He was happy again.
He could run all around.
When the little boy helped him,
A new friend he found.

The little boy saw
That the lamb had a need.
When he stooped down to help him,
He did a good deed!

A Giving Heart

When our children were in grade school and still small, our family attended a large church which had very wonderful worship in their services. We didn't have a "song book", nor did we use an overhead projector. The people would just learn the songs as they came each week and sing them from memory. The worship was beautiful as the people sang and worshipped from their hearts and raised their hands in praise to the Almighty God.

After one of the evening services I was standing by the piano, and a young man from India came to me to inquire if there was a source or a song book where he could get some of the songs we sang. I told him that our church didn't have such a book, but that there was a small chorus book with some of the songs which was available in our church book store. He thanked me and left.

Now sometimes after the services we would give our children change to go to the book store and buy something. That was true this particular evening. Our son came back with a refrigerator magnet about Jesus.. ...he collected them. But our daughter didn't have anything when she came back. I said to her, "Why didn't you buy something?"

This was her answer: "A man came into the store to buy a song book. It cost $1.25, and all he had was a dollar, so I gave him my quarter."

This so touched my heart........ and I'm sure it touched the man's heart too, because our daughter was only seven or eight years old at the time.

A Gentle Touch

When kindness and gentleness
Softly are shown,
It leaves sweet reminder
And good seeds are sown.

Kindness and gentleness
Restore and bring healing.
They are lovely expressions
Which speak with much feeling.

If you've had a hard day
And harsh words were spoken,
Or you are just down
And feel somewhat broken...

Choose to remember
Those times that you've known,
When kindness and gentleness
To you have been shown.

You will find joy
Or much-needed hope,
Or courage to "stand"
And with hard times to cope.

When kindness and gentleness
Softly are shown,
It leaves sweet reminder
Of good times you've known.

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver."

The Rooms Of My Life

If Jesus came into
the rooms of my mind,
What would be waiting there?
What would He find?

Would negative thoughts and
doubt make Him weep?
Would meaningless clutter
be piled in a heap?

If Jesus came into
the rooms of my heart,
Would He be at peace there,
or want to depart?

Can I stop what I'm doing
and set all aside
So He can find welcome
and want to reside?

Sometimes our Savior
cannot find a "home",
For we don't receive Him
and cause Him to roam...

In search of a life
which will give Him first place...
Where the rooms are quite full
of His beauty and grace.

"Set your mind on things above, not on things of the earth."

A Christmas Gift

A little babe of priceless worth...
This tiny child who came,
Lying in a manger low,
But come to set the world aflame.

A spark of love from God's own heart,
Kindled warmly long ago,
Became our promise of salvation.
Through this child His love would flow.

Remembrance of our Savior's birth
In this blessed time of year
Recalls for us the Father's love
As Christmas Day draws near.

A special time to praise our God
With joy and adoration.
The Father gave us His own Son
As promise of salvation.

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace."

The Old Fir Tree

Once there was an old, old tree. And it had stood for many years, enduring storms and drought, wind and weather.... and broken limbs....

Over the years many had gathered around its base and rested in its shade. Many found a place of refuge in its shadow. The tree was a symbol of strength, and its roots reached very deep.

It did not lose its leaves or have a season of rest, as some trees do, but was always green and stately and beautiful. The sound of the wind in its branches was soothing and restful.

I have known people whose lives are like that of the old tree.... who stand for long periods of time.... unwavering in their positions. They have strong foundations, and their lives are examples of deep strength and encouragement for others. They do not waver, though storms may threaten.

And even when they are old and "weathered", they are unchanged. By their steadfastness they are a glorious inspiration to many.....

"Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit."

Grace Is

.....Encouragement to win the race when we are tempted to quit.
.....A full measure provided when we only see half a measure.
.....The helping hand extended to pick us up when we have stumbled or fallen.

.....His covering in a harsh and unyielding world.
.....Strength in the midst of weariness.
.....Sustenance in the midst of affliction.

.....Long-term when we are short-term
.....The ability to do more than we think we can.
.....The courage to function when in pain.

.....The ability to be strong in the face of weakness.
.....A resting place when we've stood for a long time.

.....An unfinished list, because.....Grace is always more.

"And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance of every good work."

Where Am I Going?

I realize that what I know
Won't get me where I need to go.
I ponder and I hesitate,
And when unsure... procrastinate.

But as I lean on Christ the Lord,
He'll guide my feet and lead me toward
The goal that He has planned for me...
(Which by myself I could not see).

I have assurance every day,
In knowing He will light my way.
He gives me strength for each new task,
Even before I think to ask.

Though trials and pain may come my way,
I know that by my side He'll stay.
He'll help me find His very best
And keep me in His perfect rest.

As I walk with Him each day...
Surely I will find my way.

"You will show me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore."

Light

A Child's Perspective

In our city, in years past. there was a large water reservoir (one of several).......

In the middle of the reservoir, under the water, were some large spotlights. When the lights were turned on in the evening, light beams would shine up through the water into the night sky.

One evening as we were passing by there, our four-year-old daughter said, excitedly, "Mommy, Mommy, look! The light fills up the darkness!"

The perspective of a child is often so precious..... and it really caught my attention...... Light dispels darkness. Even when we walk into a darkened room and turn on the light switch, light does indeed fill up the darkness.

This is true also in our spiritual lives. When we invite Jesus to enter in, His light will "fill up the darkness" in our hearts, in our lives, and in our situations..... darkness will have to flee......

"Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

The Real Reason

I tried to buy some Christmas cards
To send to friends and brothers,
But none told of Christ's precious birth
And I would not buy others.

When I inquired, they told me that
"They only got so many."
I wanted cards that tell His story,
But they did not have any.

As I left the store I thought
"This holiday feels hollow.
How sad to leave Christ out of Christmas",
And tears began to follow.

Jesus is our only hope
For peace, joy and prosperity.
At Christmas we should honor Him
In practice, love and charity.

Christmas..... it's all about Him.

"I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."

A Safe Abode

Wisdom is a firm foundation
A pleasant place to make abode.
She will never change or tarnish,
Nor can time her strength erode.

In her house is understanding...
Knowledge of the Holy One.
As we live within her shelter,
We will learn about God's Son.

Wisdom will watch over us,
Crying out when we make error.
She'll always guide us back to truth
And be our constant standard-bearer.

She is faithful, she is strong,
Able to discern all wrong.
Her fruit is better than fine gold.
Riches and honor to her belong.

"Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding; for her proceeds are better than the profits of silver and her gain than fine gold."

My Burden Is Light

When all seems lost and sorrow enters,
And in the heart your sadness centers,
Know that God will hear your cry.
He sees your heart and hears your sigh.

When you are weary in your race
And one more day can't seem to face,
He will give the strength you need
To reach your goal and to succeed.

When confusion seems to reign
And you find yourself in pain,
He will lead and guide you through.
He will show you what to do.

If you've failed and made offense...
Afraid to face the consequence,
He will give a second chance
And help you through your circumstance.

In Jesus' Name are might and power
To meet your need in every hour.
Call upon His wondrous name.
Then give Him glory and acclaim!

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Procrastination's Excuse

Procrastination waits and waits
And never seems to get much done.
She doesn't have much urgency
And simple tasks she seems to shun.

Instead of saying, "It can wait -
I'll deal with it another day",
She should rise and go to work
On each new task without delay.

For "waiting" is a tired game
And misses possibility.
It's better to be prompt and ready
And have accountability.

It's very freeing just to know
That there is nothing "pressing in".
To have a clean slate every day
Is just the best way to begin!

"And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men."

People Who Inspire

GLENN

Glenn had a very soft heart, and he loved people. He especially loved children.

He was an incredibly gifted artist and craftsman. But because he worked with chemicals sometimes in his work, he had a physical breakdown at age 47 and could not work again.

He lived in a lower income section of town and would often reach out to help his neighbors. Over a period of years, when he would go fishing and catch a steelhead, he would give the fish to people in the neighborhood, or he would have it smoked and canned and then give it away as gifts.

After he became disabled, he began to work for a charitable organization through his church. When the organization received calls from people in need, he would join with another man and go out to meet the people who were in need. And then, if the request was legitimate, the organization would arrange to meet the needs. He spoke of one family of ten they visited who had no beds. Even the 88-year old Grandpa was sleeping on the wood floor.

Glenn commented that whenever he would feel depression, he would go out on these calls. When he saw how much worse off others were than he was, it helped him to feel better.

Many children in the neighborhood would stop by to see Glenn. If he felt good enough he would sit on the front steps and visit with them. Most of these children didn't have much, but they knew Glenn was their friend. He made kites (really nice, colorful kites) for many, and he fixed their bicycles or whatever else needed fixing. He loved the children.

Glenn was not a wealthy man and did not have good health, but he understood giving and practiced it..... he gave much to others.....

"And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'"
Acts 20:35b NKJ

A Place of Growth

In this "hurry-up" generation
Patience is of short duration.
Most don't want to make commitment
Nor for service will consent.

In service we must stretch and grow
And change of thinking undergo.
Most would rather look away
And spend their time some other way.

Service is a place of growth...
A place which we must never loathe.
When we go there we will learn
Humility and deep concern.

Our perspective will be new.
Rich understanding will accrue.
We shouldn't falter or ask "Why?",
But serve in love and self deny.

No greater blessing can be found,
For surely here does love abound...
Taking time to serve another,
Neighbor, friend, boss or brother.

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others."
Philippians 2:3-4 NKJ

My Computer and Me

Sometimes I can't type,
Sometimes I can't spell.
And my words look quite funny
When my fingers rebel!

Then sometimes my bifocals
Play tricks on me.
They make things look funny
When I'm trying to see.

So words I've ne'er seen
Appear on my screen...
Hilarious sentences
With typos between.

I do not think
That I'm getting old.
"These things just happen",
Is what I've been told.

It seems that my mind
And my fingers don't "click".
I find I can't hurry...
I'm not quite as quick.

Don't want to slow down
'Cuz I'm having fun.
But I sure need to "proof"
Everything I have done!

Think On These Things

When your spirit starts to sag
And daily musings tend to nag,
Remember all the Lord's good things
And feel your spirit take on wings.

If you don't focus as you should,
The bad things will o'erwhelm the good.
So daily choose a pleasant thought
And focus on what God has wrought.

It may not be an easy day,
But Jesus' light will chase away
All the worry, all the fear,
And fill your heart with joy and cheer.

In your bank of memories store
How He blessed you o'er and o'er.
Collect these thoughts as hidden treasure
And they will give abundant pleasure.

"Whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy - meditate on these things."

Christmas Lights

One year at Christmas time our family became aware of an older couple who were very poor. He was ill and somewhat disabled, so she would work at odd jobs to try to earn a little money here and there, but they didn't have enough.

Our children were in grade school, and we didn't have much extra, but I was moved that we needed to do something to bring the joy of Christmas to this couple.

So I went to the nursery and bought a small Christmas tree (about three feet tall), Then I suggested to our children that we should look through our Christmas decorations and choose some light strings and ornaments to put on the tree. Having done that, we set out to go visit this couple.

When we arrived at their door, they were totally surprised. We set up the tree, and the children decorated it for them. They were delighted just to have children come to see them. My mom gave them a small gift, and they were thrilled because the man needed a watch and now he would be able to get one.

It didn't seem like we had done much, but to this couple it meant really a lot. They had not had a Christmas tree for many years, and their apartment wasn't a cheerful place at all. (It simply was all they could afford). The colored twinkle lights on the tree seemed to transform the whole situation, and the fact that we had come lifted them up when they were really down.

This only took one afternoon of our time, but afterwards we were so glad that we had done it.

Heaven's Song

A golden strand of worship
Is threaded through my day,
Woven in the fabric
Of all I think or say.

Rejoicing in my heart abounds,
As God brings forth rich melodies.
In my spirit I hear sounds
Of harps and choirs and symphonies.

Sweet music flows throughout my day
And gathers deep within my soul.
All my song shall be to Him.
With joy His Name I will extol.

This joy that flows from God above...
What sweet expression of His love.

A Sunshine Friend

I want to be a Sunshine Friend...
The love of Jesus to extend,
To brighten someone's rainy day
With little things I do and say.

Perhaps if I just share a smile,
Someone will feel that they're worthwhile.
Or if I speak a cheerful word
Someone may feel their prayers were heard.

The times I make a telephone call
Or wave at someone may seem small,
But I may be the only light
To make that person's day shine bright.

A Sunshine Friend will pray and know
Just when to call and say "Hello",
For Jesus speaks in quiet ways
Within the heart of one who prays.

A Sunshine Friend I want to be.
I pray His light will shine through me.

The Christmas Rush

Weary from shopping, all worn out...
Is this what Christmas is about?
Every year we overdo.
This situation needs review!

It really doesn't make much sense
To rush around and make expense.
We should not be obligated
To do what others have dictated.

Jesus is the real reason
That we celebrate this season.
As we're reminded of His birth,
Christmas finds it's real worth.

Christmas is a special time
When we hear choirs, bells and chime,
Sounding forth to hail His name
And His wondrous birth proclaim.

Worship Him in celebration!
Bring Him praise and adoration!
Focus on the real reason
To celebrate the Christmas season.

Something To Ponder

What example am I in my daily walk....
How does my life speak in the way that I talk...
Who may be watching my actions each day...
"Actions speak louder than words," so they say...

Several years ago we had some neighbors who had three small children. As we began to get to know this family, we realized that they were very, very poor.

Late one summer, as the school year was approaching, I realized that the children were not going to have any new clothes for school. The family simply didn't have enough money to buy them any. So I decided to make dresses for the two girls and a shirt for the boy..... to surprise them. Now this wasn't any big thing for me to do, since I sewed all the time and had fabric on hand. For me, this was a fun project.

Well, I finished the clothes, gave them to the children, and never thought any more about it.

But several years later someone in my family, who wasn't a Christian, made comment about how nice she thought it was that I had done this for these children. Her statement jarred me to the very core of my being. I did not realize that this person had been watching me.

We never know who may be watching us and how much effect we have on others by the way we live. We can, unknowingly, lead others to change their pattern of living just by the example we set. In this we have awesome responsibility and unending opportunity.... to serve others.

The Footsteps of Jesus

The footsteps of Jesus
In the sands of one's heart
Leave beautiful imprints
And new life impart.

But when strong winds of change
Blow the sand all around,
Then after a time
The prints can't be found.

So if we welcome Him
Again and again,
Our hearts will be full
Of His imprints then.

And though the winds blow
Or the waves overflow,
The imprints He made
Will continue to show.

Over time He is etched
In the sands of a heart,
And He can be seen
By the love we impart.

"Therefore be followers of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet-smelling aroma."
Ephesians 5:1-2 NKJ

My Joy

LORD.....

You bring the laughter in my day.....

Your joy is as rippling waters in a brook.....
Waters traveling happily on their way downstream.....
Light-hearted, delightful.....

Waters which bubble up and over stones and obstacles
And are not troubled.....
They do not look back.....

Waters singing freely as they travel to their destination.....
A happy stream flowing through my day.....

"He who is of a merry heart has a continual feast."

A Prayerful Call

Our nation needs to bow it's head
And bend upon it's prideful knee
To humbly show it's gratitude
For freedom and prosperity.

For God has kept His hand upon us,
Watching over us by night,
Honoring the cries of those
Who prayerfully stand for what is right.

Today we call upon His name,
Repenting of our spot and sin,
Asking Him to heal our nation,
Restoring righteousness within.

"If My people who are called by My name will hunmble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land."

Mirrors

The mirrors of the soul,
when filled with the Spirit of God,
reflect myriad colors and dimensions...

Rich hues and glistening light...
beyond what the mind comprehends.

As His Spirit moves within a life,
that life is as a living, revolving, glass ball
with many facets of light...

Beautiful to see...
A kaleidoscope of God's glory
resting there and causing change.

The beauty of the Lord in residence...

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."

A Special Day

God bless you on this special day.....
"What special day is this?" you say.....

Today was made for you and me
By our loving God..... That we might be
A blessing or a joy to one
Who doesn't know His Precious Son.

God gave His Son that we might live.
Now we have chance His love to give.
Those to whom His love we show
His Glorious Son may come to know.

What greater joy can fill this day
Than knowing one has found His way.....

"This is the day which the Lord has made.
We will rejoice and be glad in it."

Gossip

Gossip seems to sneak around...
Behind one's back it can be found!
It starts a fire which won't go out
And really is a gadabout!

Lots of times it isn't true
And isn't worth the time to chew.
It can "upset the apple cart"
And many troubles it will start.

Do not speak what may be "hearsay".
Only truth should we convey.
True friends won't repeat a matter.
Neither will they lie or flatter.

When gossip rears it's ugly head,
Do not share what has been said.
From memory let the words erase
And thereby offer love and grace.

"He who covers a transgression seeks love, but he who repeats a matter separates the best of friends."
Proverbs 17:9 NKJ

Our Daily Bread

Give us this day our daily bread....." Surely this was the prayer of many back during the depression years, for not many were working.

During that time our family lived next door to a man who owned a greenhouse, but who didn't have enough money for food. Mom learned of his situation and invited him to come have dinner with our family so that he would have at least one meal a day. He hesitated, saying, "I work in a greenhouse where my clothes get dirty, and also, I wouldn't want to interrupt your family time, but if you will set the meal on the fence, then I will come out and get it."

Now this couldn't have been easy for Mom, because at that time she had three small children and a baby to take care of. But each day she would fix a plate of food for him and take it out to the fence, and he would come out to get it. She did this every day for two years, until one day, when she placed the plate of food there on the fence, he didn't come out..... he had passed away.

Mom had seen a need and she met it faithfully every day.....

"She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy."

Worry

Worry is an ugly critter.
We shouldn't be it's babysitter!
What good is worry anyway?
It never will our fears allay.

Worry is a constant nag
And makes a happy spirit sag.
It robs and steals our energy
And keeps our minds from being free.

It fusses, frets and just won't rest.
Repeats itself and is a pest!
We can't allow this pest to stay
So we will walk in faith and pray.

When we're feeling very stressed
The Lord will give us perfect rest.
In trusting Him we find release...
That blessed place where there is peace.

"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

A Time of Plenty

Thanksgiving time is drawing nigh...
The season when we glorify
The God of plenty and provision,
Praising Him for what He's given.

A time to give, a time to share,
A time for others' needs to bear,
For many lives have been displaced
As circumstance has laid them waste.

A time for kindness and compassion,
Reaching out in prayerful fashion,
Truly caring from the heart
For those who need a fresh, new start.

A time to give, a time to share,
A time for us to show we care...
By reaching out in Jesus' Name
We to them God's love proclaim!

"For I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in..... Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me."

A Strong Nation

We must be a people strong,
Armed with prayer against all wrong,
Vigilant to stand our ground
And keep our guard up all around.

Powers of darkness would destroy
And evil practice would employ,
But people of God on bended knee
Can keep our nation safe and free.

Prayer warriors side by side
Will overcome the evil tide.
We have a God of power and might,
And we will stand for what is right!

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord....."

Grace

His grace is so real
An everyday friend;
More than is possible
To comprehend.

It cannot be measured
In terms that we know,
But provides the space
In which we can grow.

It covers our faults,
Overlooks all our sin,
And is present to help us
Each race to win.

A full measure given
From the Father above
His awesome expression
Of mercy and love.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness."

Words

Let us measure every word...
Let only careful speech be heard.
Words leave marks for good or evil.
Choice of words can wound or heal.

Careless words have no import
And Godly purpose sometimes thwart.
Lying words much damage do
Because they cover and misconstrue.

How much suffering, how much pain
Are caused by sharp words of disdain,
But words of kindness and of truth
Bring joy and peace, will heal and soothe.

Lord, help our words to careful be,
Only You can set us free
From speaking irresponsibly
And causing great calamity!

Let us ponder every word
And let not frivolous speech be heard,
But only words we carefully season
With Godly wisdom and with reason.

"Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one."

The Best Plan

When man thinks he knows
What the next step should be,
If he has not prayed,
How foolish is he!

For man cannot guess
What the future will be
Without divine wisdom
To help him to see.

Prayer is the key
To make all things work out.
God gives us instruction
But we must not doubt.

Trusting in Him
Is the most blessed way
To have peace and success
In our lives every day.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
and He shall direct your paths."

Changing My World

I can offer a smile...
I can speak a word...
I can choose to see the best in others...
By this I may show love.....

I can speak an encouraging word...
I can speak a blessing...
I can pray for healing...
By this I may bring hope.....

I can take time to listen...
I can reach out and touch...
I can offer a helping hand...
By this I may bring joy.....

One small event at a time.....
I can make a difference.

My Best Friend

All my thoughts are turned to You
To learn Your ways and know Your heart.
Throughout the day I wait on You
Fresh revelation to impart.

For You are Life and You are Light,
The answer for my every need.
Strength and purpose found in You
Will help me prosper and succeed.

I cannot walk through life alone.
I wouldn't even try.
For you alone direct my path.
Only You can satisfy.

You are my lifeline...my best friend!
I long to hear Your voice,
That I might have a deeper walk.
What reason to rejoice!

"For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice. My whole being follows hard after You and clings closely to You."

Autumn Winds

I do not see from whence you come
Or know just where you go.
In rustling leaves and bending boughs
I hear you moving to and fro.

You seem to tell me with your voice,
"We're in a brand new season."
You've wakened me from summer laze
With urgency of reason.

For though I love the lively feel
Of autumn's brisk, fresh air,
I know that for the winter season
I must soon prepare.

The same way that I see the signs
As seasons come and go,
The Spirit whispers in my heart
Each thing I need to know.

In the Spirit's changing wind
I know I'll find direction.
I'm ever grateful to our God
For covering and protection.

"When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will
guide you into all truth; for He will not speak
on His own authority, but whatever He hears
He will speak, and He will tell you things to come."

People Who Inspire

RUTH

Ruth was a woman who had a bubbly personality and who loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a woman of prayer, and she believed in His healing power.

When she was eighty-four she went into the hospital for evaluation of a liver condition. Her husband Milt came to see her in the evening, and as he came into the room he heard the woman in the bed next to Ruth crying. (I never learned the name of the other lady, but will call her Mary for purposes of this story). Milt poked his head in through the curtains around Mary's bed to see what was the matter.....

Mary, who was seventy-five years old, had been brought into the hospital with severe pain from arthritis in both hands and both feet. Her hands were very crippled, and her feet were twisted out of shape. She could no longer walk and had been in a wheelchair for several years. She was crying from the intensity of the pain. Milt asked her if she would let his wife Ruth pray for her because Ruth believed in the healing power of God. She said, "yes." So Ruth got up from out of her own hospital bed and went over and laid hands on Mary and prayed for healing.

Around 4:00 a.m., the next morning, Ruth heard Mary call out quietly, "Ruth, Ruth." Then again she called, "Ruth, get up. Come here." So Ruth got up and went to see what Mary wanted. God had totally healed both of Mary's hands and both of her feet. She was excited and wanted to show Ruth.

Mary said to Ruth, "Just wait. I'm going to get up and take a shower", which she did with no help. Then she got herself dressed, and she was able to even button her own clothes, which she could not do before. Now all this was going on without the nurses down the hall even realizing these two women were up.

Mary was rejoicing and she wanted to tell somebody. So she and Ruth went down the long hallway to the nurses' station. When they got there one of the nurses asked, "What can I do for you?"

Mary answered, "Nothing! Ruth here prayed for me and I don't need anything!" She was healed and she was free of pain. Her hands and feet were normal again.

When Mary came into the hospital she was in a wheelchair. When she went home she was able to walk out of the hospital.....

My Hope

Lord, You are as.......

A lighthouse on the shores of difficulty...
A beacon of light in the night...
A ray of hope streaming forth.... unwavering...

A haven from the storms of life...
where I may take refuge...

A safe place....
where I may find peace and rest, and
where I find warmth and comfort...

You are my Hope and my Shelter...

A Home is Built

A house is built with wood and stone,
But it doesn't just become a home.
A home is built with love and care
By those who fill its rooms with prayer.

Day by day its strength is formed
As prayer by prayer its rooms are warmed.
Wisdom is its strong foundation,
Its walls are praise and celebration.

As fellowship and love abound,
Joy and laughter oft resound.
When happy hearts in God agree
The home is strong in unity.

A house just built with wood and stone
Will never quite become a home
Until its rooms are filled with love
As given from the Father above.

"Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding
it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches."

A Prayer For Our Nation

A tired people, worn and weary,
Praying, standing.... in travail.
Hear our prayer and heal our nation.
Let truth be known and light prevail.

Protect our country, we beseech Thee,
Help us stand and not make error.
As darkness threatens to destroy us,
Strengthen us and hear our prayer.

Guide our leaders, keep them strong.
Let them seek to know Your way,
May they always use Your wisdom
Every hour throughout the day.

Quench the fires of hate and turmoil
Stirred within by evil men.
Help us, Lord, to work together,
In Jesus' Name we pray, Amen.

"Therefore, I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.

Taking Time to Listen

When the daily cares of life
Crowd forward for attention,
Consuming all my time and thought
And blurring good intention...

I know it's time to stop and listen,
Lest I miss the Spirit's voice.
For I could "rush" right past a turn
Or make a less-than-perfect choice.

I never want to get so busy
That I miss a loved one's cry.
I'll never know that person's heart
If I don't listen to his sigh.

I must listen with my heart,
And not just lend a "casual" ear.
Only then will I discover
All that God would have me hear.

For when I truly learn to listen
The Holy Spirit will impart
Ability to see and hear
And reach out with the Father's heart.

"Hear instruction and be wise, and do not disdain it.
Blessed is the man who listens to me."

A Very Present Help

Lord, I am so grateful to You. When I was weary, You saw my need..... and You helped me.....

It was late when we arrived at the emergency room, and there were many waiting for care, so I realized it might take a little time before I would get back home. As the night wore on into the wee hours... 12:00 and 1:00 and 2:00 a.m., I grew concerned, for I needed to get up early the next day.

Three o'clock came. I tried to doze, sitting in the waiting room. Finally, around 4:00 a.m., I was able to leave. I knew I would only get two hours' sleep, and that was not good.

The following morning my body was so-o-o tired. The work I needed to do lay before me, and I didn't know how I would get through the day. But I set out anyway, not really confident of my own ability at that point.

Halfway through the morning I felt my body begin to "sag down" from fatigue. Suddenly, as that was happening, I felt like something was touching my back and rib cage, almost like some sort of framework. I waited, but it didn't move. And as I waited a little longer, it still didn't move. And then I realized that the Lord was steadying and literally supporting me. His hand was upon me. I could feel the strength of His hand.

Not only was I able to get through the morning but was able to complete my entire day. The Lord had lifted me up out of my fatigue and renewed my strength.

What a gracious God we have!

"God is our refuge and strength, a very
present help in trouble."

The Golf Course of Life

Life Without Jesus

Life is like unto a golf course......

There are many men and women out on the course, "taking aim". Without Jesus they miss what they aim at..... most of the time. Their scores aren't very good. And they sometimes have to walk a long way before they can take aim again..... if they can find the ball. And the thing they are aiming at is so very far away..... with sand traps and water in the way. Often they can only aim in a general direction..... their vision isn't sharp enough to really see the target. And the wind currents of life pull on the ball and cause it to not hit its mark.

When they get through with their game, even if they win, the score isn't recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life..... but their time is spent.....

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whoever believes in Him should not perish but
have everlasting life."

Treasure In Unexpected Places

When I see another person,
I wonder what lies within.
There may not be an outward clue
From age or size or color of skin.

Clothing, makeup, "class" or "style"
Are shallow coverings and give no hint,
For hidden in the plainest soul
Is the secret of God's blueprint.

The quiet wealth and great potential
Of His creative hand
At first glance are not seen or heard....
To know what things He planned.

All too often in life we pass
A treasure of pure gold,
And fail to see the beauty
Of that precious life unfold.

The loss is ours as we pass by
And hurry on our way.
God might have wanted to bless us,
Had we paused a moment to stay.

Ours might have been the cheerful note
So needed to uplift
And encourage that other person
To discover his own gift.

The lowliest soul or saddest neighbor
Could very wealthy be.
And maybe God desires to use him....
Even more than me...

Lord, help me to adjust my vision
And see as You would see....
To not look down upon another
But always humble be.

"Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit,
but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better
than himself. Let each of you look out not only for
his own interests, but also for the interests of others."
Philippians 2:3-4 NKJ

Morning Prayer

Lord, as I venture into my daily schedule many, many things compete for my attention.....

Help me to weigh carefully that to which I direct my attention, lest I become weary early in the day and forfeit valuable discernment later in the day.

Help me, Lord, to allow into my field of vision only those things which have purpose in You and are useful. Strengthen me, Lord, as I address the more difficult situations and tasks.

Help me not to lapse into discouragement or lethargy, but to maintain my level of trust in You. Help me to not overlook or miss the points of learning or the special blessings You would drop into my day.

Lord, help me to maintain a pace conducive to what you would show me, and help me to reject gracefully the interruptions that would rob away my time or focus on You.

Lord, help me to avoid that which is trivial in Your sight and focus on that which is urgent in Your sight.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

"My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord;
in the morning I will direct it to You, and I
will look up."

People Who Inspire

MURIEL

When I was a young girl growing up, a family with two daughters moved into the house across the street from us. Both the parents were crippled. The father was in a wheel chair and was in pain most of the time except in really warm weather. The mother, who had had polio, limped very badly because one leg was much shorter than the other.

We were drawn to them because of their circumstance, and we soon learned that this was a very special family. Muriel, the mother, worked in an office, but her husband could not work. The two daughters were in grade school.

Muriel was very tiny and frail-looking.... she probably didn't weigh more than 95 pounds.... and she walked with difficulty because one of her legs was much shorter than the other. But every morning, bright and early, she would go to her car and drive to work. We all wondered how she was even able to do this. On Sundays she would faithfully go to church.

She was always cheerful and would speak a positive word if we had conversation with her. There was much laughter in their house.... often we could hear them laughing. They had a humorous menagerie of pets... a dog named "Clyde", which resembled a coyote and had funny-looking fur and a funny bark, a couple of cats, and a white duck named "Dewey".

My dad used to go and mow their lawn for them. Each time Muriel would try to pay him, but he would not take pay. She was careful never to lean on anyone, so when he mowed their lawn, she would bring him cookies, or a pair of dress socks, or just something to show appreciation.

One day, when I went to the corner grocery, I saw their younger daughter there. This was not unusual, except that we heard that the girl passed away from spinal meningitis just a few hours after I saw her.... How much more burden could one family bear.....? It just seemed too much to think about. And yet, still, Muriel didn't waver or buckle under the weight of it.

Muriel had an inner strength and a positive attitude which inspired many..... the Lord was her strength.

He Is There

When your heart is aching
And tired from wear and tear,
When clouds of darkness hover
Remember - Jesus cares.

Nothing that is in us
Is beyond His tender touch.
He understands our every need
And loves us all so much.

Though the load you carry
Sometimes seems too much to bear,
He will lift that burden from you.
Remember - He is there.

He will fill your mouth with laughter
And make your heart to sing,
Will light your path and guide your way,
A happy smile bring.

If you will only trust Him
Your burdens He will bear.
His joy will be your portion.
Nothing shall compare.

For He is there.

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Richly covered by Your grace.
Holy, Holy Lord.

In Your quiet and Your peace
Is the place of sweet release.

A Gift From God

Each day is a gift from God.
Grab it and run!
Decide to do something great with it!

It is opportunity in your hands.

Each day look up.
Each day look forward.
These things we can do even when
standing in place.

Grow. Expand.
Never stop learning.
Never stop reaching out.

And by this God will enrich your life
and cause you to find new treasure.

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is
from above, and comes down from the Father
of lights, with whom there is no variation
or shadow of turning."
James 1:17 NKJ

Autumn

When summer starts to yawn and
yields her tired labors.....

Autumn steps in with enthusiasm of color and
paints her bright note far and wide.

Surely it seems that God "pulls out all the stops"
in brilliant display of color!

A lovely space in time...... with rich bounty of harvest,
with brisk, invigorating air,
with flurries of activities in preparation
for the new season.

A time of exaltation and thanksgiving
as we celebrate the beauty of creation and
the fullness of God's provision for us.

And then the leaves begin to fall
as all nature seeks a time of rest.

And as winter knocks in her own time,
autumn shuts her door quietly and slips away.

But in memory, our hearts have been warmed
against the coldness of winter
by a very loving God!

"The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord."
Psalm 33:5b NKJ

The Daily News

When we turn on the news
We're bombarded with trouble
And shaken by scenes
Of destruction and rubble.

We see people suffering
With no place to go.
Those who lost loved ones
With grief are bent low.

And then we hear those
Who point fingers and bicker,
When working together would
Get things done quicker!

This we can do....
With much prayer intercede
For those people who lead
And for people in need.

For our God will help them
This time to get through.
He will strengthen and lead them
To know what to do.

"Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
And attend to the voice of my supplications.
In the day of my trouble I will call upon You,
For You will answer me."
Psalm 86:6 NKJ

Within the Veil

Entering within the veil,
Drawing very close to You...
I find peace and new life there
Each day my spirit to renew.

In Your inner chambers, Lord,
Is sweet communion... rich and rare.
Time and space have no import...
Of You alone I am aware.

What awesome joy to hear Your voice
And sense Your Holy Spirit hovering.
What blessed peace is found within
Your presence and Your covering.

This sweet refreshing that You bring
Has changed my life from day to day.
What more wondrous place to be
And what more blessed place to stay.

"How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts!
My soul longs, yes, even faints for the
courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry
out for the living God."
Psalm 84:2 NKJ

His Love

I stood at the window looking down at the beach. And all was still except for the lapping of the waves. It was early in the morning, and the sand was smooth from the washing of the waves through the night.

As I watched, a family with children came walking down the beach. The children had sticks in their hands and were writing in the sand and digging holes.

After the family passed by, the sand looked "messy". There were holes and debris everywhere. The serenity I had seen was no longer there.

Then a big wave came in and washed over the whole scene. As the water receded, once again the sand appeared smooth and untouched......... as though nothing had happened. The stillness and beauty were there again.

And God spoke.......... "My love is like that.........."

It continually washes and restores ..........
Even as the waves washing on the beach........

"For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor princi- palities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Romans 8:38-39 NKJ

Angels on Duty

My daughter drives a classic car - a 1966 Mustang.

The former owner of this car didn't do the repair work on it properly. "Bucket of bolts" and "held together with bubble gum and baling wire" would be apt references here. Sometimes I wonder what keeps it running, except for the fact that I pray for my daughter and know God watches over her. She herself says that every time she gets in her car she prays, "God, get me where I'm going."

Recently she was coming to my house, traveling on a freeway, and lost the water out of her radiator. She pulled off to the side, got out of her car, and started to lift up the hood of the car. Before she could get the hood up, a van with three fellows stopped. One fellow said to her, "I have a '65 Mustang. I think I can fix your problem."

As he checked to see what the problem was, he found that a "cap" had broken from age, causing the water to drain out. He went to his van, came back with a "cap" and put it on her car. She didn't know what the cap was from, but it exactly fit her car.

The fellows had bottled drinking water in their van, and they poured it in her radiator. Then they offered to follow her to the exit where she would leave the freeway to make sure she would get off safely. They would take no pay for helping her.

What a miracle! She didn't lose more than ten minutes' time in her trip, and the car was running fine.

As she told me about this, I laughingly commented, "Well, that may have been the only place in this whole metro area where the part which was needed was available (because the car is so old), and God knew right where the part was!

When I later shared this story with a friend, his comment was, "Angels. It was angels...." And then I realized. God had sent angels to help her.

"For He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you in all your ways. Psalm 91:11 NKJ

A Blessed Path

"Tis wisdom to inquire of God
Each step along the way,
For He will guide and guard our path
And keep our feet from going astray.

For error leaves behind a trail
We sometimes find we can't erase.
When we strike out without direction
What pain and sorrow we must face.

Simple is the path He gives us,
...Though hard work it may take.
If we but follow His design
Of special blessings we partake.

if we've strayed or missed the mark,
Broken pieces He will mend.
He will forgive and lift us up,
His grace and mercy He will send.

We have a very caring God
Who wants for us the very best.
What a joy to live for Him
And by His gracious hand be blessed!

"Teach me Thy way, O Lord;
and lead me in a plain path..."
Psalm 27:11 RSV

Music from my Heart

"Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer" Psalm 19:14
